Socrates was also known for spending his life conversing about integrity, justice and religious quality wherever his fellow citizens gathered. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Socrates vs Pericles" essay for you Create order On the other hand, Pericles was a Greek statesman and leader of Athens who lived from 460 to 429 B.C.. Pericles started his political career by establishing a vote in the popular assembly. The assembly was the occasionally opportunity for male Athens to speak their minds and exercise their votes regarding the government. This lead to the exile of Cimon, the Athenian leader who cared more about the relationship with Sparta than Athens. Pericles is known for transforming Athens from a limited democracy to a popular government. A limited democracy is a democracy where average citizens still had to defer to members of the aristocracy. Popular government is where the mass of people were fully sovereign. This event has been named the true beginning of Athenian democracy. However people like Socrates had a different view of democracy. Socrates would view democracy as a disaster for the people because the people who would be voting have so many factors in their voting decision that can poor ly affect the city. In 399 B.C., Socrates was placed on trial for allegedly corrupting the youth and not believing in the deities of the city of Athens. Plato, one of Socrates pupils, spoke Socrates apology which back then means defense, to defend himself and his conduct. Throughout the case and the trail, Socrates defended himself as at aknow-it-all which did not give him a good look to the jury. Socrates knew he was right with his beliefs and didnt care if all jurymen in all of Athen voted in favour of sentencing him to death for corrupting the youth. Socrates was accused of teaching the youth to question authority and his whole goal was to expose the authoritative and orthodoxy views of his time that were all wrong. It was obvious that the jury was run based on their emotion. Socrates believes that the people who vote in the democratic body have emotions that influence their decisions resulting in an not necessarily reasonably vote. In the apology, Socrates uses a horse and trainer analogy for how ma ny people it takes to influence a child. Socrates believes that Meletus had never thought or cared about the youth, but however, only cares now because the dislike against Socrates. Meletus was one of the youngest accusers in the trail. In the apology it states, How about horses? Does one man do them harm and all the world good?the trainer of horses, that is to say, does them good, and others who have to do with them rather injure them? (Socrates 22). Socrates argues that it is absurd for the jury to believe that he is guilty of corrupting so many youths in Athens. He thinks it impossible for him to do that as one single man. This analogy can be perceived as an explanation of Socrates view on democracy by rule by the many vs. by one or the few and how many results in a fallen nation. In contrast, Pericles, via his funeral oration speech, believes that democracy is better ruled by many rather than few. In the first year of the Peloponnesian War, Pericles gave speech in Athens honoring the brave warriors who were killed protecting their city-state. In Pericles speech he lists qualities of Athenians citizens who are alive and should feel honored that their loved ones and the people they know were brave enough to die for Athens and their government. Pericles believed that Athenian government, democracy, is a system where its male citizens can further in their merit rather than wealth. Perit stated, In the middle of Pericles speech, he lists some qualities of Athenian citizens. What traits does he describe? Pair these descriptions with passages in Socrates speech where he would seem to disagree.

Why Does the Atmosphere Exert Pressure on the Earth
Except when the wind is blowing, youre probably unaware that air has mass and exerts pressure. Yet, if there were suddenly no pressure, your blood would boil and the air in your lungs would expand to pop your body like a balloon. Yet, why does air have pressure? Its a gas, so you might think it would expand out into space. Why does any gas have pressure? In a nutshell, its because molecules in the atmosphere have energy, so they interact and bounce off each other, and because they are bound by gravity to stay near each other. Take a closer look: How Air Pressure Works Air consists of a mixture of gases. The molecules of the gas have mass (although not much) and temperature. You could use the ideal gas law as one way to visualize pressure: PV nRT where P is pressure, V is volume, n is the number of moles (related to mass), R is a constant, and T is temperature. The volume is not infinite because the Earths gravity has enough pull on the molecules to hold them close to the planet. Some gases escape, like helium, but heavier gases like nitrogen, oxygen, water vapor, and carbon dioxide are bound more tightly. Yes, some of these larger molecules still bleed off into space, but terrestrial processes both absorb gases (like the carbon cycle) and generate them (like evaporation of water from the oceans). Because there is a measurable temperature, the molecules of the atmosphere have energy. They vibrate and move around, bumping into other gas molecules. These collisions are mostly elastic, meaning the molecules bounce away more than they stick together. The bounce is a force. When it is applied over an area, like your skin or the Earths surface, it becomes pressure. How Much Is Atmospheric Pressure? Pressure depends on altitude, temperature, and weather (largely the amount of water vapor), so its not a constant. However, the average pressure of air under ordinary conditions at sea level isà 14.7 lbs per square inch, 29.92 inches of mercury, or 1.01 Ãâ" 105à pascals. Atmospheric pressure is only about half as much at 5 km altitude (about 3.1 miles). Why is pressure so much higher close to the Earths surface? Its because its really a measure of the weight of all the air pressing down at that point. If you are high in the atmosphere, there isnt much air above you to press down. At the Earths surface, the entire atmosphere is stacked above you. Even though gas molecules are very light and far apart, there are a lot of them!

Poverty and Underdevelopment of India - 1911 Words
Health- education linkages inequality in distribution of stock of human capital means underinvestment on the one hand and mal-investment on the other, as total and per capita stocks of human capital figures in women and backward castes indicate. Perhaps, the main reason lies in the failure of human investment revolution in economic thought to really revolutionize common thinking. individuals as well as state policy makers still perceive education expenditure as consumption and as a burden on the state which reduces public savings. it is misleading to treat public expenditures of backward castes and women as welfare but must be treated as capital formation. Poverty and underdevelopment of India does not permit adequate investment in general, including education. From the private angle, weaker sections who should invest more in education have their present consumption needs focusing on survival where education is perceived as luxury. Even if people took loans, they prefer investment in more tangible and resale able assets which yield higher ROR in short gestation periods to investment in human capital. The state is constrained by its available resources and by its welfare expenditure approach to education. Further, the capital market is too poorly organized to provide funds for investment in education. Thus to bring equity in distribution of human capital between different groups serious efforts have to be made towards reducing discrimination in schooling, improvingShow MoreRelatedThe World Bank And Its Effects On Developing Countries Essay1572 Words à |à 7 Pagesmore towards poverty reduction in developing countries, mainly through f inancial and technical support, and many critics analyze the World Bankââ¬â¢s involvement in these poverty-stricken countries. An Analysis of ââ¬ÅDo Not Go Gentle Into That Good Nightââ¬Â free essay sample
When approaching death, wise men are robust to rave against death since their knowledge and thoughts still remain. Until hollowing out what they totally contain, wise men know it is time to go into that good night, which refers to death. Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. (line 7-8, Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night) In this stanza, Thomas puts forward a group of good men. In my mind, good men are responsible and reliable. Moreover, they prefer to devote their minds fully to what they are doing. Obviously, this type of men is in the minority as the poem says ââ¬Å"the last wave by,â⬠(line 7) Perhaps Thomas alludes that his father is a good man and he deserves Godââ¬â¢s blessing. Good men self-proclaim that their works are bright enough to dance in a green bay. We will write a custom essay sample on An Analysis of ââ¬Å"Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Nightâ⬠or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page ââ¬Å"Green bayâ⬠probably refers to a high level. But they are crying because they do not get enough reputations and rewards corresponding to their efforts. However, good men do not reconcile to the adversity and they want to change the current situation. The date of death seems too early to them. They rage, rage against death. Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night. (line 10-12, Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night ) Wild men are another group of people who spend their time in vain. They spend the days just on hanging out and doing nothing useful in the sun without considering their own future and dream. Here ââ¬Å"sunâ⬠is a metaphor for comfort and leisure. They waste time in entertainment and chasing worthless things which eventually come to nought. When death almost catches up with them, they realize the true meaning of life and grieve the days which are supposed to be meaningful. The time left for them is limited. They strive for more time to set up an aim and enjoy the pleasure in the process of taking efforts. Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. (line 13-15, Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night) Grave men are the last group of people that Thomas describes. They have difficulty in seeing. I notice that ââ¬Å"blindingâ⬠, ââ¬Å"blazeâ⬠, ââ¬Å"blindâ⬠and ââ¬Å"beâ⬠are the words all start with ââ¬Å"bâ⬠sound. ââ¬Å"Bâ⬠sound let me think of the sound when plants or flowers are budding and volcanoes are erupting. It is a sound with powerful, energetic and indomitable spirits. Even though lacking one of the abilities to sense the world, grave men are strongly willing to touch the world as if they never get enough. ââ¬Å"Blind eyes could blaze like meteorsâ⬠(line 14) This is a metaphor that means grave men never distinguish their hope and always hold a passionate attitude towards life. A disabled person still can fight against the doom. Why healthy people give in to death? In the last stanza, the poet points out that this poem is particularly written for his dying father. ââ¬Å"Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. (line 17) In this sentence, ââ¬Å"curseâ⬠, ââ¬Å"blessâ⬠, ââ¬Å"fierceâ⬠and ââ¬Å"tearsâ⬠all have the rhyme ââ¬Å"sâ⬠which makes the tone soft-sounding. Thomas begs his father to die with anger, not humility. Whatever the ways, the curse or bless, the poet can bear it so long as his father not surrender to death. This poem is st ructured in a form called villanelle, which has 19 lines long, but only uses two rhymes. In this poem, ââ¬Å"nightâ⬠, ââ¬Å"lightâ⬠, ââ¬Å"rightâ⬠, ââ¬Å"brightâ⬠, ââ¬Å"flightâ⬠, ââ¬Å"sightâ⬠and ââ¬Å"sightâ⬠all end with ââ¬Å"tâ⬠sound and ââ¬Å"dayâ⬠, ââ¬Å"theyâ⬠, ââ¬Å"bayâ⬠, ââ¬Å"wayâ⬠, ââ¬Å"gayâ⬠and ââ¬Å"prayâ⬠all end with ââ¬Å"eiâ⬠sound. The rhythm of this poem follows as ââ¬Å"aba, aba, aba, aba, aba, abaaâ⬠. Moreover, it is clear to see that first five stanzas are triples and last stanza is a quatrain, which is also another standard of villanelle. There are two refrains in the poem. ââ¬Å"Do not go gentle into that good night. â⬠(line 1) is repeated in line 6, line 12 and line 18. ââ¬Å"Rage, rage against the dying of the light. â⬠(line 3)is repeated in line 9, line 15 and line 19. Thomas urges his father to rage against a peaceful end and endeavor to resist his demise. He also emphasizes death is right. But we should make a stand for our life. Only in this way, can we say that we are content and not regret for our whole life when reminiscing it.
